FAQ on Calibration Capability and Calibration of Scales
When do you need a calibrated scale?
As soon as it is used in legally regulated trade. This includes, for example:
✔ The sale of goods by weight
✔ The calculation of fees based on weight
✔ The production or control of pre-packaged goods
✔ The weighing of vehicles
✔ The determination of body weight for medical purposes
✔ The production or dosing of pharmaceuticals.
Further information can be found in the Measurement Law.
What should be considered with calibratable scales?
A calibratable scale loses its calibration capability if it is not calibrated by the manufacturer before shipping. Therefore, it is important to check before purchasing whether the scale needs to be calibrated.
What are calibratable scales?
Calibratable scales are not yet calibrated but meet the requirements to be calibrated.
What are calibrated scales?
Calibrated scales are measuring instruments that are both calibratable and calibrated. The calibration is performed directly at the factory through the manufacturer's initial calibration. A recalibration by one of the German calibration offices is therefore unproblematic, as all legal requirements are met.
Changes from January 1, 2025
From January 1, 2025, the previous registration requirement (user notification) for calibrated scales will no longer apply. This is part of the Fourth Bureaucracy Reduction Act.

What remains unchanged?
- Calibration Requirement: Regular calibration remains mandatory. Further information on calibration requirements for industrial and commercial scales can be found here:
Information Sheet Calibration Requirement for Industrial and Commercial Scales.pdf
- Calibration Intervals: The deadlines remain unchanged (e.g., 2 years for retail scales).
- Timely Application: You must continue to arrange calibration with the responsible calibration office in a timely manner.

* Initial Calibration (Conformity Assessment) by BOSCHE as Scale Manufacturer
** Recalibration - Fees from the calibration office for recalibrating the scale
Recalibration
Recalibration is carried out by the calibration office, and the Measurement and Calibration Fees Regulation (MessEGebV) regulates the fees.
