Registration obligation for scales according to § 32 MessEG
If you use a scale in commercial or official transactions, it is subject to the registration obligation according to § 32 of the Measurement and Calibration Act (MessEG). This particularly applies to scales that are used to determine the weight of goods or services in order to calculate prices or to carry out invoicing.
Your scale must be registered within 6 weeks after it is put into operation so that the authorities can carry out a timely inspection. You can do this online via the central reporting platform of the Calibration Office www.eichamt.de. We would be happy to support you with the following step-by-step instructions.
Note:
The notification requirement for users of new measuring devices only applies until December 31, 2024.
From January 1, 2025, the previously applicable registration requirement (user notification) for calibrated scales will be abolished. This change is part of the Fourth Bureaucracy Reduction Act, which was passed by the Bundestag to relieve companies and citizens of unnecessary bureaucracy.
What remains?
- The regular calibration of scales is still required.
- The calibration intervals remain unchanged (e.g. 2 years for shop scales and precision scales).
- You must still apply for the next calibration at the responsible calibration office in good time (at least 10 weeks before the calibration period expires).
This new regulation is intended to reduce bureaucratic burdens for companies and at the same time ensure consumer protection by maintaining regular calibrations.
Please make sure to comply with the calibration periods to ensure the proper use of your scale. You can find more information on the official pages of the Mess-und EIchwesens Niedersachsen (MEN).
