Where are checkweighers used?

Checkweighers are primarily used in order picking and production processes. They record and monitor the product weight, enabling accurate compilation of goods. They are often referred to as plus-minus scales or checkweighers. A static checkweigher typically consists of the scale display with associated software and the actual scale itself.

Checkweighers are used wherever precise weighing is required – whether for products, food, or ingredients. Typical areas of application include the food, pharmaceutical, and retail industries. They also provide valuable support during goods loading and for monitoring shipping weights and costs in the shipping department. Their function goes beyond simple weight control:

  • Weight control – ensuring consistent product weight
  • Production monitoring – overview of usage, as well as incoming and outgoing products
  • Order picking / portioning

When a static checkweigher is used for portioning, everyday tasks are optimized. This not only simplifies workflows but also increases the process's cost efficiency. For example, if a raspberry producer wants to portion berries by a specific weight, the target weight and tolerance range can be defined and entered into the checkweigher. Employees portion the raspberries and are alerted if the target weight is under- or exceeded. Customers receive the correct quantity of product, and the company avoids losses due to overfilling.

How does a checkweigher work?

Using a checkweigher is straightforward and optimized for fast-paced work environments, as the scale is primarily intended to simplify workflows. The weighing terminal allows entry of a target weight and a tolerance range. The system is self-explanatory – no extensive employee training is required. If the measured weight falls outside the tolerance range, this is indicated using a traffic light signal:

●●●●●● Underweight = Yellow●●●●●●
●●●●●● Acceptable weight = Green●●●●●●
●●●●●● Overweight = Red●●●●●●

This visual representation of the weighing process has proven itself in practice. At a glance, it is clear where the weight stands. This enables fast processing of goods or parcels.

What is the weighing range of static checkweighers?

The weighing range of BOSCHE static checkweighers varies. Since the checkweighing display and software are compatible with all BOSCHE scales, there is no fixed weighing range. This means that both heavy and light goods can be weighed or checked depending on the application. This allows for universal use of BOSCHE checkweighers in all industries and work environments.

For example, weighbridges can be equipped with the software and checkweighing display to monitor fill levels of up to 20 tons. This flexible weighing range makes BOSCHE checkweighers a valuable work tool in all environments – from industrial to various other sectors.

Application Example

Checkweigher "Static Checkweighing"

A checkweigher allows for quick and precise control of quantities or package contents. The BOSCHE checkweigher features both acoustic and visual signaling. In our sample video (1:23 minutes), we demonstrate how to inspect crate contents using a semi-automated process. To ensure the most accurate measurement, the crate weight is first "tared," meaning that during the later weighing with the BOSCHE checkweigher IPS-S, only the contents are evaluated. This method also assumes that the crates are of equal weight (or the variation is smaller than the weight of a single item). The LED traffic light displays the weighing status visually and clearly. A yellow light indicates a missing item or underweight, red signals an exceeded target weight, and green confirms that the target weight has been reached – limit values can also be output acoustically in parallel.

Sorting

In production processes involving fresh fruit and vegetable cultivation, goods are often portioned or sorted by weight immediately. Checkweighers with a large weighing platform are well-suited for this purpose.

Fresh food to go

The trend of offering fresh meals in small portions for takeaway has grown significantly in recent years. A checkweigher allows "Fresh to Go" containers to be filled quickly and efficiently.

In production

In semi-automated production workflows, a checkweigher is often found at each workstation. Employees can portion the correct quantity in just a few steps. Up to 100 products can be stored via a recipe memory function.

Quality control

In quality control, it is essential to avoid follow-up errors. Checkweighers define the target range. The inspector places the product on the scale, and the integrated signal light quickly indicates whether the target weight has been reached or exceeded.

"Harvest Weigher"

During harvesting, checkweighers are used in order picking. Right after harvest, many fruits are packed directly into crates, boxes, or other containers to a specified weight using checkweighers.

"Picker Weigher"

With the picker weigher, it is important that the scale instantly shows the operator where the weight stands in relation to the tolerance range. If the checkweigher shows yellow, a little more is needed. Red indicates too much. Green means the target weight has been reached.

Packing

A checkweigher allows quick and easy portioning of package contents to the desired amount. Recipes for up to 100 products can be stored in the checkweigher. The three displays on the scale show the MIN - MAX - TARGET weight.

Fresh shipping

When speed is essential! For fresh foods, the cold chain must not be interrupted. Checkweighers help ensure this. They can be used in combination with all weighing platforms – from blister trays to Euro pallets – for reliable checkweighing.

Portioning scale

Large becomes small. Anyone repacking or portioning goods and food into smaller containers can't do without a checkweigher. Manual filling or packaging by unit count can be performed quickly and easily with BOSCHE checkweighers.

FAQ about Checkweighers

What does a checkweigher do?

A checkweigher determines the target weight using weighing technology. A predefined target value is entered into the scale in a unit such as kilograms or grams. Limit values are also defined to indicate the minimum and maximum acceptable weight. A good checkweigher determines within milliseconds whether the item on the scale is within the defined tolerance range.

How does a checkweigher work?

Checkweighers operate like most other scales using a strain gauge sensor (DMS). The built-in load cell(s) detect the weight and send a measurement signal to the weighing controller, which processes it into a readable weight value. Using the input keypad, the operator can define the target, minimum, and maximum weight. Depending on the application, the scale evaluates the load accordingly.

Where are checkweighers used?

The areas of application for checkweighers are diverse, and a distinction is made between static and dynamic checkweighers. Their usage ranges from "harvest scales" (used directly in the field to pack fruit into crates) to industrial settings where checkweighers are integrated into automated processes.

What is the difference between static and dynamic checkweighers?

Static checkweighers are operated manually and are not integrated into fully automated processes—they are typically standalone devices. Dynamic checkweighers, on the other hand, are used in industrial settings as part of ongoing quality control during production. For example, they are used to check fill quantities or the number of items in packaging units.

Static checkweighers and the Prepackaging Regulation

According to the Prepackaging Regulation (FertigPackV), defined prepackaged goods may not fall below the nominal fill quantity. It is the manufacturer's responsibility to ensure compliance using appropriate measuring methods and devices.

This regulation protects both consumers and manufacturers. By verifying the nominal fill quantity, both parties can be confident that neither too little nor too much of the product is sold or received.

Static checkweighers make it possible to control fill quantities and ensure compliance with the Prepackaging Regulation. At the same time, the workload is minimized thanks to the particularly user-friendly operation of the checkweighers.
