Mechanical scales
A big advantage of mechanical scales is that they do not require batteries or a power connection. This makes the scales very environmentally friendly, economical and can be used at any time.
- Beam balance - consists of a horizontal beam with two shells, which is supported at the pivot point via an axle. Beam balances determine the weight (unlike spring balances) directly and are not dependent on local differences in gravity .
- Inclination scale - here the measured weight is not weighed with a counterweight, but by the deflection of a mass on a lever, which enables reading on a measuring scale.

Types of scales by design
Depending on the design, scales can be divided into 3 groups
• Mechanical scales
• Electronic scales
• Hybrid scales
